How to console in Korean (한국어로 위로하기)

 

By expressing interest (관심을 표현하면서)

Those expressions show interest in the listner's situation. 

  • 괜찮아? 
    Are you okay?
  • 어디에서 잃어 버린 거야?
    Where have you lost it?
  • 그 사람을 많이 좋아했구나.
    You must love him/her.

 

By giving an advice (충고나 조언을 하면서)

It is an expression where you sincerely point out or advise the listener on their shortcomings or mistakes so that they can do better in the future.

  • 조심했어야지. 여기에 바닥이 미끄럽다고 써 있잖아.
    You should have been more cautious. It says here that the floor is slippery.
  • 이번 일이 좋은 경험이 될 거야.
    This experience will be a valuable one in the future.

 

By providing a positive outlook (긍정적인 전망을 제시하면서)

Those expressions present a positivie outlook that things will go well in the future.

  • 너무 걱정하지 마세요. 나쁜 일 뒤에는 좋은 일도 있어요.
    Don't worry too much. After bad times, good times will follow.
  • 더 좋은 사람이랑 만날 거야. 세상에는 좋은 사람이 많아.
    You will meet someone better. There are many good people in the world.
  • 열심히 했으니까 다음에는 시험에 합격할 거야.
    You worked so hard, so you will pass the exam next time.

 

By expressing willingness to help (도움의 의사를 표현함으로써)

You can also express consolations by offering assistant to the listner who is facing dificult or challenging situations.

  • 내가 옆에 있어 줄게.
    I will be by your side.
  • 병원에 같이 가자.
    I will accompany you to the hospital.

 

By encouraging (격려하면서)

Those expressions is used for offering courage and encouragement to the listener to overcome their current difficult situation.

  • 원래 잘 해 왔잖아. 조금만 힘 내. 다 왔어.
    You've been doing well all along. Just hang in there a little longer. You're almost there.
  • 이거 끝나면 나랑 맛있는 거 먹으러 가자. 힘 내.
    After this is over, let's go eat something delicious together. Stay strong.

 

By proposing alternatives (대안을 제안하면서)

You can also suggests coping strategies to help the listener get out of a difficult situation.

  • 너무 힘들 때는 술 먹지 말고 맛있는 음식이나 친구로 풀어.
    When you're feeling overwhelmed, instead of drinking alcohol, try to relieve stress with good food or by spending time with friends.
  • 계속 안 좋은 생각이 들면 차라리 욕을 해. 속이 시원할 거야.
    If you keep having negative thoughts, it might be better to cuss. You must feel better afterwards.

 

By taking sides (편을 들면서)

Unconditionally taking the listener's side without any reason might be the one!

  • 그 놈 여기 데려 와. 내가 죽여 버릴 거야.
    Bring that human here. I will kill that body.
  • 말 안 해도 다 알아. 나는 무조건 널 믿어.
    I understand everything without you saying a word. I will always trust you.

 

By suggesting activities for a change of mood (기분 전환할 수 있는 활동을 제안하면서)

Offering words or suggesting activities that can help the listener quickly move away from their current sadness and bring about a change in mood, which can be comforting.

  • 술이나 한잔 하자.
    Let us have a drink.
  • 맛있는 거 먹으러 가자.
    Let's get some good food.
  • 어디 가볍게 여행 갈까?
    Why don't we have a light and casual trip right now?

 

By emphasizing (공감함으로써)

Express consolations by understanding and empathizing with the listener's negative situation or circumstances and expressing sympathy.

  • 정말 힘들었겠다.
    It must be a hard time.
  • 그래, 나도 들었어. 이번 시험이 너무 어려웠대.
    I heard too. People said the exam was really difficult this time.
