'한강'이라는 이름은 본래 순수 한국말에서 큰 물줄기를 의미하는 '한가람'이라는 말에서 유래되었습니다. '한'은 '크다, 넓다'와 같은 의미이고, '가람'은 한자어 '강'의 순수 한국말입니다. 

The name 'Han River' originally came from the native Korean word 'Hangaram', which means a large stream of water. 'Han(한)' means something like 'big' and 'wide', and 'garam(가람)' is the native Korean word for Sino-Korean word '강'.

 

서강나루(Seogang port). 서강나루는 용산과 더불어서 과거 조선시대 때 나라에서 세금으로 거두어들인 쌀이 전국에서 모여드는 곳으로 유명했습니다. Along with Yongsan, Seogang port was once famous as a place where rice from all over the country was collected as taxes during the Joseon Dynasty.

 

한강은 한국을 동에서 서로 가로지르는 두 번째로 긴 강입니다. 한강의 길이는 514킬로미터이고, 이 길고 큰 강이 서울을 나누어 강의 북쪽을 강북, 강의 남쪽을 강남으로 부릅니다.

The Han River is the second longest river in South Korea, crossing from east to west. The Han River is 514 kilometers long, and this long, large river divides Seoul, with the north side of the river called Gangbuk(강북) and the south side of the river called Gangnam(강남).

한강에는 오랜 역사를 가진 섬들이 있는데 예전 한강에는 지금보다 더 많은 섬이 있었습니다. 쓰레기 매립장으로 사용되었던 '난지도'는 현재 월드컵공원이 되었고, 뽕나무가 많은 섬이었던 잠실 일대는 현재 빌딩숲이 되었습니다. 반대로 없던 섬이 생기기도 했습니다. '서래섬'은 올림픽대로가 건설될 때 인공적으로 만들어진 것이지요. 이처럼 한강의 섬들은 퇴적과 침식에 따라 생겼다가 사라지기도 하고, 인공적으로 만들어지기도 했는데, 현재 남아 있는 한강의 섬은 여덟 곳이고, 그 중 가장 큰 섬은 여의도입니다.

The Han River has a long history of islands, and there used to be more of them than there are now. Nanji island, which used to be a garbage dump, is now the World Cup Park, and Jamsil with many mulberry trees in the past, is now a forest of buildings. Conversely, islands have also been created where there were none, such as Seorae Island, which was artificially created when Olympic Boulevard was built. As such, islands in the Han River have appeared and disappeared due to sedimentation and erosion, and have also been artificially created. There are currently eight islands in the Han River, the largest of which is Yeouido.

1985년의 난지도(위)와 현재의 난지도 모습. 과거 난지도는 엄청난 크기의 쓰레기 섬이었으나 1996년부터 쓰레기 산에서 나온 침출수와 가스 처리를 위한 안정화 공사에 들어가 현재 이곳은 월드컵공원이 되었습니다. 매립한 쓰레기에서 나온 침출수는 정화를 거쳐 한강으로 흘려 보내고, 가스의 경우는 일부는 연료로 사용하고 나머지는 소각 처리하고 있습니다. The leachate from the landfilled garbage is purified and discharged into the Han River, while the gas is partially used as fuel and the rest is incinerated.

 

 

 

한강에는 다리도 많습니다. 한강의 다리들은 대부분 길이가 1킬로미터가 넘는데요, 제일 긴 다리는 방화대교로 2559미터입니다. 서울의 시민들은 한강에서 다양한 여가 생활을 즐기곤 하는데, 한강의 곁에 공원이 많기 때문입니다. 한강공원은 모두 11개이고, 이 공원의 위치에 따라 각각의 이름이 다릅니다. 그리고 공원마다 특별한 행사를 진행하기도 하는데, 거의 대부분의 행사 참가비가 무료이고 행사의 종류도 다양해서 많은 사람들이 한강으로 모입니다.

The Han River has many bridges. Most of the bridges are over one kilometer long, with the longest being the Banghwa Bridge, which is 2,559 meters long. Residents of Seoul enjoy a variety of leisure activities along the Han River because there are many parks along the river. There are 11 Han River Parks, each with a different name depending on the location of the park. Each park also organizes special events, most of which are free to attend and have a variety of events, attracting many people to the river.
